John Tracey came from Rosses Point near Sligo in Ireland. He Captained the Aylevarroo and would have sailed to and from Liverpool many times, so it is possible that he may have moved his family to Liverpool and used St Anthony,s church to worship.

He gives his age as 23 years and 3 months, with his date of birth as 27 June 1891 and his birthplace Liverpool, England.
Lawrence is unmarried and gives his next of kin as his mother Mrs White of 239 43rd Street, Brooklyn, New York, USA. His occupation is a Clerk and he list that he had served before for 3 years with the 5.V.B Kings Liverpool Rifles. His form notes he is entered into the Canadian Infantry 5th battalion 2nd brigade.

John was born and enlisted in Liverpool.

The service records for John have survived. He enlisted at Liverpool on 5 September 1914, giving his age as 32 years and 260 days, and his occupation as a Labourer. He is 5 feet 4 1/2 inches tall, weighs 112 pounds with a chest measurement of 35 inches. Brown hair, Blue eyes, and has two dots on his right forearm.
John's wife is listed as Ellen Josephine ( nee Hart ) who he married at St Ambrose church on 1 August 1905. His children are Richard Demetrius born 15 December 1906, Joseph born 20 March 1909, Albert born 8 November 1911, Francis born 25 January 1914, and Mary Josephine born 30 August 1918. The family is living at 25 Orry street, Liverpool. His mother is listed as Esther and his sister as Regina aged 33, both of 82 Claudia street, Liverpool.

John's Signature On His Enlistment Papers
John trained with the King's 12th battalion in the Uk. On 2 February 1915 he forfeits one days pay for being absent from tattoo, and is confined to barracks for ten days on 21 February 1915 for Improper conduct. On 7 March 1915 at Witley camp in Surrey he is confined to camp for Insolence to an NCO, then on 19 April 1915 while at Rollestone camp in Wiltshire he is given 21 days detention once more for Insolence to an NCO. John is absent while on pass on 7 June 1915, and recieves ten days confined to camp.
John leaves the UK on 23 July 1915 arriving in France the next day. Nothing is mentioned about his time in France but it is certain he would have seen action. On 8 September 1916 he is appointed Acting Lance Corporal ( unpaid ) fifteen days later he is wounded in action recieving a gun shot wound to his right wrist, and is in hospital until 20 October 1916. John is then sent back to the UK on 23 October 1916.
John is given leave and returns to Liverpool, but he overstays his pass and is arrested in Liverpool on 1 November and returned to the Army where he is severley repremanded. He is posted to the King's 3rd battalion on 4 November 1916, then again is posted to the King's 24th on 1 December 1916. He sails with them from Folkstone the next day and arrives in Boulogne, France. Here he joins the King's 4th battalion.
On 18 January 1917 John is promoted to Corporal, then on 21 May 1917 he is made Acting Sergeant. He stays acting Sergeant with his battalion who see action into 1918. On 11 April 1918 John is wounded in action and sadly dies the following day from his injuries.
