William's Signature On His Enlistment Papers
William competed two months drill on 30 September 1912, and was defered to musketry on 30 May 1913. While based at Seaforth William gets into plenty of trouble during his service and his punishment record reads as follows. 14 July 1914 refusing to obey an order and confined to Barracks for three days. 15th August i1914 nsulting a guard and 18th August found drunk and sentenced to 14 days detention, returning to duty on 1 September. 6 September absent from 5.30 am until 9.30 pm and is confined for 7 days, then on 8 September he has three more days added for walking away with his meal then throwing a portion of it into the mess tent. On 31 October 1914 William is given five days field punishment number 2 the reason listed says " effective for duty " On 1 November 1914 he goes absent from tattoo until 9.30 pm the following day and recieves seven days confined to barracks, and on 19 November he is absent from parading with the mobile force at 2pm and again is confined to barracks for seven days. Then on 28 December 1914 he recieves 5 days field punishment number 2 for going absent for 5 days, probably he decided to enjoy Christmas, I have to admire him for that.
An explanation of field punishment can be found here http://www.awm.gov.au/encyclopedia/field_punishment/index.aspHis records list his parents as Robert and Elizabeth Culshaw of 6 Tatlock Street, Liverpool. His brothers are listed on the document dated 1919 as Robert 20 and James 17, and his sisters are Elizabeth Rimmer 24 of 18A Newsham Street, Liverpool, Margaret ( surname looks like HEALY ) 23 of 1 Tatlock Street, Liverpool, and May Oaklay 28 of 6 Portland Street, Liverpool.Another brother Thomas is listed on a 1912 document, but not on the 1919 one.

A Character Reference From William's Employer In Liverpool
William recieves three days field punishment number 1 on 4 June 1915, but the reason why is not stated. On 3 December 1915 he is hospitilised with Diarrhea and returns to his duty on 7 December. He is then given leave from 5th to 12th January 1916. William finds himself transfered to the 98th Machine Gun corps on 2 December 1916 under the number 70740.He is granted leave to the UK between 9 May 1917 and 8 June, then on 15 June 1917 he is fined four days pay for being absent from tattoo roll call. Sadly the next entry for William note him being killed in action on 26 August 1917.
